Sect leader acquitted in Brazil mutilation case

Saturday, December 6, 2003

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, (Reuters) – A Brazilian court on Friday acquitted the alleged leader of a Satanic sect of the ritual mutilation and killing of boys in a remote Amazon town, officials said.

The decision, by a 6 to 1 jury vote at the end of a 17-days trial in Belem, Para state, caused tumult in the packed courtroom with tears and protests from the victims’ families.

“Valentina de Andrade is acquitted of the charges,” said judge Ronaldo Valle. Andrade, 72, fainted after the judgment and received medical treatment in court.

Andrade’s defense lawyers made no comment but the prosecution said it would appeal against the court’s decision.

Andrade was accused of the murder of three boys and castration of two others in Altamira, 200 kms (125 miles) from Beleme, between 1989 and 1993. She was said to have led the crimes of a sect known as Superior Universal Alignment.

Defense lawyer Arnaldo Busato Filho presented the court documents, including one from Parana state police in southern Brazil, showing that Andrade wasn’t in Altamira when the crimes were committed.

Prosecution evidence in the case included a video of Andrade’s husband receiving a gun as a gift. “It has bullets of gold to kill little vampires,” Andrade was heard saying.

A group representing the victims says Andrade believes she was contacted by a medium who told her boys born after 1981 were possessed by the devil.

Four other defendants have already been sentenced in the case, which started in August, for prison terms of 35 to 77 years. They included two doctors who were involved in the removal of the genitals of several of the boys.

The four are all appealing against their sentences.

The victims’ families say there were 19 victims in all — boys aged between 8 and 13 who were kidnapped, tortured or killed in Altamira. Not all the boys cases were brought to trial this time because of insufficient evidence.

Doctor gets 56 years for Brazil sect killings

BRASILIA, Brazil, (Reuters) – A Brazilian court sentenced a doctor to 56 years in prison for the ritual mutilation and killing of boys in a remote Amazon town more than a decade ago, a prosecutor in the case said on Wednesday.

Cesio Brandao received the sentence for the gruesome killings of three boys and the attempted murder of a boy who escaped from his captors after having his genitals removed.

Fourteen years after the first kidnappings and mutilations, the trial is being closely followed as a test of Brazil’s ability to bring justice to remote areas where local elites rule.

“This is justice for a community that put their trust in a doctor who went on to kill their children in Satanic rituals,” said prosecutor Clodomir Araujo.

Another doctor involved in the killings, Anisio Ferreira de Souza, was last week sentenced to 77 years in prison for the ritual killing of three boys and the attempted murder of two.

Two other men were sentenced last week to a total 92 years in jail for the murders and mutilations.

A court was set to decide the case of Valentina de Andrade, the fifth and final defendant, on Sept. 22.

She was jailed last week after she tried to flee the country.

Prosecutors say Andrade is the leader of a sect known as Superior Universal Alignment that was founded in Argentina.

A group representing the victims says Andrade believes she was contacted by a medium who told her boys born after 1981 were possessed by the devil.

The victims’ families say there were more victims — 19 in all.

They were aged between 8 and 13 and were kidnapped, tortured or killed between 1989 and 1993 in the Amazon town of Altamira.

Some had their eyes gouged out, wrists slit and genitals cut off.

SAO PAULO: A Brazilian court sentenced a doctor to 77 years in prison for the ritual mutilation and killing of young boys in a remote Amazon town over a decade ago, a prosecutor in the case said on Thursday.

Anisio Ferreira de Souza received 57 years for the gruesome killings of three boys and 20 more years for the attempted murder of two other boys who escaped from their captors after having their sexual organs removed.

Thirteen years after the first killings, the trial is being closely followed as a test of Brazil’s ability to bring justice to remote areas where the law may be under the control of the local elite.

“The success of this trial shows that the impunity of years past is over ? things in Brazil are changing,” said Clodomir Araujo, one of the prosecutors trying the case.

Local news broadcasts showed the aged Souza sitting hunched before judge Ronaldo Valle. As he read the sentence, the courtroom erupted into applause.

Araujo added that the two victims who had escaped after being mutilated were critical witnesses in the case.

Another doctor involved in the killings, Sergio Brandao, will be sentenced on Monday. Two other men were sentenced last week to a total 92 years in jail for the murders and mutilations.

The fifth defendant, sect leader Valentina de Andrade, is set to be sentenced on September 22.

Earlier on Thursday, Andrade was jailed after she tried to flee the country.

Valle ordered Andrade’s arrest after police found she had tried to catch a flight to neighbouring Argentina on Tuesday. She had checked in but had turned around after finding she had to go through passport control, which is carried out by federal police in Brazil.

Valle said this was evidence that she might flee before her sentencing, court officials said. She was handcuffed and escorted from the court by police in the Amazon town of Belem and taken to a local women’s jail.

The prosecution says she is the leader of a sect known as Superior Universal Alignment, which was founded in Argentina.

A group representing the victims says Andrade believes she was contacted by a medium who told her boys born after 1981 were possessed by the devil.

A group representing the victims’ families says there were many more victims ? 19 in total. They were aged between 8 and 13 and were tortured or killed between 1989 and 1993 in the Amazon town of Altamira. Some had their eyes gouged out, wrists slit and sexual organs cut off.

Brazilian men sentenced over mutilations

A court in Brazil has sentenced two men to decades in prison for participating in the murder and ritual mutilation of several young boys between 1989 and 1992.

A jury in Belem, 2400km northwest of Rio de Janeiro, sentenced businessman Amailton Madeira Gomes, to 57 years of prison for the murder of three children killed in the western Amazon city of Altamira.

The jury also sentenced Carlos Alberto dos Santos Lima, a former policeman, to 35 years of prison for the killing of one of the boys and attempted homicide of two others, the Para state justice court said on its Web site yesterday.

The lawyers of the convicted said they would appeal the sentence, the court said.

Several boys disappeared between 1989 and 1992. Six were found dead, with their genitals mutilated. Three more were mutilated, but survived, and five are still listed as missing.

One of the surviving boys, now 23, said he recognized Santos Lima as the man who raped him when he was 10, and then took him into a forest where he was mutilated.

The defendants, who authorities said were members of an alleged satanic group, the Superior Universal Alignment sect, had only been charged with three murders and two mutilations.

The sect’s leader, a 75-year-old woman named Valentina Andrade, and two more defendants, both doctors, will be tried separately on Tuesday, the court said.

Five on trial for child ritual murders

Friday August 29, 2003

Five influential members of Brazilian society went on trial this week for the suspected torture, castration and murder of five children, aged eight to 13, in satanic rites over a decade ago.

Two mutilated survivors testified at the trial.

Prosecutors charged that 19 children used in black magic rituals at Altamira, in Brazil’s Amazon region, between 1989 and 1993. Five had been tortured, some castrated, before being killed.

The witnesses were among five survivors of the rituals who managed to escape, but not before also having their genitalia mutilated.

They were aged between eight and 13 at the time.

Brazil’s Special Secretary for Human Rights Nilmario Miranda said the trial had ?symbolic? significance because two doctors, two former policeman and a businessman were involved.

The trial opened yesterday in Belem do Para, some 688 kilometres east of Altamira, because the defendants are influential members of Altamira society.

The five defendants, including Valentina de Andrade, 75, the leader of the Superior Universal Alignment (LUS) sect, are alleged to have used their influence in efforts to stop the case from going to trial, intimidate victims and make evidence disappear.

One of the witnesses to testify, Wandiclei Pinheiro, now aged 22, was nine years old at the time of the crimes, and managed to flee from his captors. He was expected to identify former police officer Carlos Alberto Santos as a participant in the ritual.

Although he has been given federal police protection, Pinheiro said he had been threatened with death a month ago if he testified.

The lawyer for the victims’ families, Clodomir Araujo, said Thursday that Pinheiro’s testimony would be ?fundamental? in the jury’s decision.

Defendants have been split into two groups: those accused of collaborating, including Santos and shopkeeper Amailton Gomes, and the three main suspects.

Miranda warned overnight that justice in the case would be only ?partial? since only one of seven probes launched in the past 13 years had shed any light on the case.

Two physicians who allegedly participated in the castrations, Cesio Brandao and Anisio de Souza, and the leader of the group, are to be tried separately.

The cult believes that children born after 1981 are evil and must be expunged. Only adherents to the group are to escape the pending destruction of the earth by escaping in a spacecraft, it believes.

Sect leader on trial in Brazil mutilation murders

Aug. 27, 2003

BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) – A Brazilian sect leader and five others accused of kidnapping boys in a remote Amazon town, cutting off their genitals and sacrificially killing them has gone on trial.

The trial, which comes 11 years after the police investigation began, will be a test of Brazil’s ability to bring justice to isolated areas where the legal system may be under the sway of powerful locals.

It could also help unearth similar killings elsewhere.

“This is a very important case, even if it comes 11 years afterward,” the government’s Human Rights Secretary Nilmario Miranda told Reuters on Wednesday from the court house in the northeastern town of Belem. “We have to celebrate the fact that there is a trial.”

Valentina de Andrade, the suspected leader of a sect known as Superior Universal Alignment, two doctors, two security guards and the son of a businessman in the town of Altamira are charged with murder, attempted murder and torture.

They are accused of attacking five boys, three of whom died and two of whom were mutilated but escaped. The two surviving boys are expected to testify at the trial.

According to the families of the victims, Andrade is said to have been contacted by a medium who told her that boys born after 1981 were possessed by the devil.

A group representing the families says there were many more victims — 19 poor young boys in total aged between 8 and 13 who were horribly tortured or killed between 1989 and 1993. Some had eyes gouged out, wrists slit and sexual organs cut out.

Of the 19 victims, six died, five were never found and the rest escaped, some after being drugged, bound and mutilated.

Legal experts helping the victims’ families have worked for years to bring the suspects to trial. Police dropped many of the cases because of lack of evidence or incompetence, according to Flavio Pachalski, a spokesman for the families.

Saying justice could not be done in remote Altamira, the defence pushed to move the trial to Para state capital Belem, which was granted earlier this year. The trial could go on for weeks.

Brazil-Argentine UFO Sect Suspected Of Mass Murder

From Scott Corrales - StarMedia.com

April 10, 2001

Buenos Aires - While a member of the "Lineamiento Universal Superior" (L.U.S. -- Superior Universal Alignment) cult is being accused of crimes against children, the cult's leader, Valentina de Andrade, is also under suspicion. She is believed to be living in Argentina, according to investigators in this country's capital.

In the city of Altamira, State of Para, 13 children were raped, with their genitalia mutilated for what appear to be ritual satanic purposes, and then stabbed to death. Physician Anisio Ferreira de Souza, an alleged member of the L.U.S. sect, is among the accused and is currently in jail. He is also under suspicion of having created an organization dedicated to murdering minors to steal their vital organs, and of having committed crimes in the states of Parana, Goias and Espiritu Santo.

Judge Luis Ernane Ferreira Malto, of 3rd Crimilan Court in Altamira, mandated preventive custody for other parties suspected of being involved--among them another physician, a former corporal in the military police, and Valentina de Andrade herself. "As of today, they shall be hunted throughout the country and even abroad," stated the judge when issuing the preventive custody decree.

In 1992, Brazilian justice investigated Valentina and her group due to the disappearance of a child in the island of Guaratuba, in the southern state of Parana, where another children had become a victim to ritual crime. Valentina and her followers avoided prosecution when suspicions were proven to be inconsistent. From that moment on, the sect ceased all public operations and its leader left Brazil for the city of Londrina in Parana. Taking up residence in Buenos Aires, she was followed only by a few faithful adepts, having been deserted by hundreds of followers who had become aware of the psychological manipulation and economic exploitation to which they had been subjected under the Brazilian's leadership.

While former members who denounced these abuses testified to the non-existence of ritual crime or the kidnapping of children by Valentina de Andrade, they did accuse her of having commited "coercive persuasion" after forcing a couple to turn over their baby daughter to a childless couple, and forcing other couples to leave their children with grandparents or other guardians in order to "leave the planet" aboard her spaceship. These children were believed to be "negative energies" by Valentina, who advised that they be left behind. Meanwhile, she portrayed herself as a lofty cosmic entity of "light, love and truth" who had become incarnate on Earth to perform a mission.

Valentina's preching started in 1981 after having received allegedly extraterrestrial messages through her former husband, Argentinean national Roberto Olivera, her accomplice in the sect until 1987. Shortly after, Valentina embarked upon her mission to spread the information she had supposedly received from the cosmic beings. This task is apparently pursued only by a few former members of her group, after having separated themselves from Valentina. A confidential source says the woman's "abuses betrayed the mission, using her extraterrestrial-imparted knowledge for her benefit and not for the common good, for which reason the teachings must be purified from her distortions and rescued from the ridicule she created by her ravings."

While Brazilian authorities sought Valentina de Andrade in the country, hoping to finde her in Sao Paulo, sources knowledgeable on UFOs in Argentina claim that L.U.S.'s leader is spending her 70 years of age in Buenos Aires under fair economic conditions, without working and relying on the earnings of her followers. She changes residences frequently and has not denied herself a trip to Las Vegas among other ostentatious ways of fulfilling her "mission on Earth".
